It worl as a good indication if you are doing somewhat a proper racing line or not and if you are being fast enough for that pace or not, but AI do not react like a real player so racing against AI, for me, is as good for learning and improving as that (but I prefer to race my own ghosts at Hotlap or just going online from time to time but. Try to set AI to around your race pace and go from that, but remember AI may ram on you if you brake too early or is just too slow exiting the turns.
also without knowing the track, while alone without no one in front of you you may get lost and can not overtake or defend your position properly either if you dont know the track properly, so practicing is indeed a good option, but the career mode, from what I tested, is not a good "practice" (dont even look fun either).

Time trial with practice or hotlap is better than career for that. you dont really care about being the fastest, and it is ok, but if you want more of a challenge or to anjoy more the online racing, you should think about improving.
